Tool types
We can differentiate between various types (or classes) of test tools depending on the phase of the testing process you are involved in and the type of task you want to automate. Types of test tools are also subdivided into specialized categories2 for use with specific platforms or fields of application (for example, performance testing tools for web applications).
You will rarely need to use the whole spectrum of test tools in the course of a single project, but it is nevertheless useful to know what is available so you can make informed decisions about what you need when the time comes.
The following sections describe the basic functionality of different types of test tools.
