Press forging employs a slow squeezing action produced by mechanically or hydraulically operated press as compared to rapid impact blows of hammer in drop forging. The slow squeezing action penetrates completely through the metal producing a more uniform deformation and flow of metal during the process. In this process, there is maximum utilization of energy by the workpiece while in drop forging some part of energy is transferred to machine and foundation. The dimensional accuracy is also very good in this process.
Advantages of Press Forging Over Drop Forging
- It produces low noise level.
- It is faster than drop forging, since only one squeeze is needed at each die impression.
- Control of two die halves is easier than hammering in drop forging.
- The product has superior structural quality.
