Internet of things in agriculture

The ultimate aim of technology-based agriculture is to cultivate in a smart manner, produce the farm with less wastage and deliver the produce to end-user at reasonable price and quality. Nearly 50% of the farm produce could not reach the consumer due to many reasons like wastage, transportation cost, climatic conditions, lack of direct marketing etc.

IoT system in agriculture works on the real-time data that can be collected by the farmers (humidity, temperature, soil moisture, soil pH value, nutrient applications, etc.) through different sensors and is used to take action when abnormal situations arise. This reduces the stress on farmers in continuously monitoring the fields. Along with this, there are several benefits of using IoT in agriculture. Right from the soil testing and farm reaping enormous devices exist to adopt new techniques in farming.

  1. The collected data can be analyzed to predict the future statistics.
  2. Risk management can be achieved through smart sensors and networks in farming.
  3. Complete automation without human intervention helps to improve productivity and activities are performed in an efficient manner.
  4. Good quality can be achieved through different farming techniques and automation methods.
  5. While harvesting, grading automation and packaging can be done through proper identification and tracking techniques.
  6. Based on past data farmers can get the advice on optimal prices for their crops throughout the year (Figure 8.1).imagesFigure 8.1   IoT in agriculture.
