The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) created ISO 50001 as a voluntary energy management standard to help organizations use energy efficiently and cut cost. The US DOE developed the 50001 Ready recognition program as a way to guide organizations in setting up an energy management system using the ISO 50001 structure. 50001 Ready allows organization to self‐attest to these efforts and can be a useful first step in pursuing ISO 50001 certification (Lung 2018). Achieving 50001 Ready recognition involves three steps:
- Complete the 25 tasks of the 50001 Ready Navigator, a free online tool that helps guide and track progress.
- Self‐attest to the completion of the 25 Navigator tool tasks.
- Measure and improve site energy performance over time.
A Ten‐Step Outline for Energy Analysis: Understand the Energy Used to Transform Raw Material into Finished Product to Enhance Energy Efficiency (Stowe 2018)
- Step 1. Identify the raw materials
- Step 2. Characterize the final product(s)
- Step3. Tour the plant
- Step 4. Develop the process flow (or block) diagram
- Step 5. Catalog energy inputs
- Step 6. Identify energy wastes
- Step 7. Identify energy‐recovery possibilities
- Step 8. Pinpoint energy‐efficiency opportunities
- Step 9. Identify new technology opportunities
- Step 10. Implement solutions; energy analysis for energy‐efficiency program should be an ongoing process
