Sulphur
The amount of sulphur in the fuel oil depends mainly on the source of the crude oil and to a lesser extent on the refining process. The normal sulphur content for the residual fuel oil (furnace oil) is in the order of 2–4%. The ranges of variation of sulphur in liquid fuels in percentage are as follows: Kerosene oil (0.05–0.2), diesel oil (0.05–0.25), light diesel oil (LDO) (0.5–1.8), furnace oil (2.0–4.0), and low sulphur heavy stock (LSHS) (less than 0.5).
The main disadvantage of sulphur is the risk of corrosion by sulphuric acid formed during and after combustion, and condensing in cool parts of the chimney or stack, air pre-heater and economizer.
