Soil moisture sensor, as clear from its name, is used to detect the moisture level of soil. It detects presence of water content in soil depending upon checking the resistance or dielectric constant of soil. The measured value can be calibrated and can be affected by different parameters like type of soil, environmental temperature, conductivity of soil etc. These sensors are used by farmers or gardeners to check water volume of soil.
Soil moisture sensor is an analog machine and mainly works on capacitance principle to detect the water content in soil, for example, it records the dielectric permittivity of soil which is a function of water content. Simply it is inserted it in the soil and it shows the output of moisture level in the range between 0 and 1023 (Figures 9.6 and 9.7).
