Some applications of IoT in agriculture

  • Water management
  • Soil monitoring
  • Routine operations
  • Monitoring and control systems
  • Smart irrigation system
  • Agri-produce and agri-resource management

In many parts of the country, for watering of crops different irrigation methods are used like tube wells, canals and by pumping ground water with the help of heavy motors that operate on electricity. Ground water pumping with motor depends upon electricity availability during day and night times which leads to high electricity consumption. Sometimes due to lack of continuous monitoring by farmers, fields are over-watered which leads to wastage of resources. So, IoT technology is used to track this practice in more effective way by using moisture sensors. This article presents how moisture is detected with the help of sensors, Arduino IDE (integrated development board) and Blynk app (Figure 9.1).
