A digital image is a function f(X, Y), where X, Y coordinates are discontinuous in spatial and brightness. It is represented by a set of numbers that can be stored and controlled by a digital computer. It is formed by combing small bits of data called pixels. These pixels are stored in a computer, so the processing of the digital image is faster and less costly. The five fundamental steps in digital image processing are image acquisition, image storage, image pre-processing, communication and image display.
