The function of a steam separator is to separate the suspended water particles carried by steam on its way from the boiler to the engine of turbine. It is installed in the main stream pipe very near to engine. The constructional details are shown in Figure 4.28.

The steam from boiler enters the steam separator through a flange and moves down. During its passage down, it strikes the baffles and is deflected upward. The steam on striking the baffles causes the particles having higher density to fall to the bottom of the separator with high inertia. Dry steam deflected up and comes out through the flange B. The separated water is collected at the bottom which is drained out by drain cock and drain pipe.
