Japanese terms
- Seiri – Put things in order
- Seiton – The proper arrangement
- Seiso – Clean (keep polished)
- Seiketsu – Purity (maintain clean)
- Shitsuke – Commitment instilling attitude/atmosphere to maintain 5S
English terms
- Sort – Get rid of what is not necessary
- Straighten – Everything has a place and is in it
- Shine – Keep clean machine/workplace
- Standardize – Systems and procedures to maintain 1–3
- Sustain – Maintain systems/procedures (1–4)
